Climate Anxiety and Eco Therapy
What is Climate Anxiety
As we become aware of the ecological crisis we are facing, it is natural to experience strong emotions such as anger, grief, hopelessness or fear. You are not alone with these feelings. Climate distress happens when people wake up to the ways that climate change impacts our current and future safety. Extreme weather patterns worldwide make it difficult to avoid the climate threat. This is an enormous problem for both people and the natural world.
We can feel hopeless and overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenges we face. Some people may find it difficult dealing with the ordinary tasks of daily life.
Climate distress can lead people to think deeply as they make decisions about having children, where to live, what to eat, and many other choices.
Therapy Can Address Climate Anxiety
Working with a Climate Aware Therapist can help support you to process your feelings so that they don't overwhelm and paralyze you. Sometimes these are big feelings. Therapists can help you prioritize your response to the crisis and find meaningful ways to engage with it rather than to shut down and try to run away from it.
In my climate-informed practice I acknowledge the psychological impact of climate change. I help people build emotional resilliency in the face of climate anxiety and grief.
